THE APOSTLES: I am intrigued by altering the flat surface of a canvas before painting on it. Having used birch bark for several paintings, I came across the kozo fiber. After boiling for a while, the fibers become soft and can be glued to the canvas in various patterns, thus rendering the surface three dimensional. I painted the series of the twelve apostles, plus a thirteenth, on such canvases.
