Philip Frey works primarily in acrylic and watercolor, has exhibited throughout the East coast since 1994, and is a juried member of the Maine Arts Commission's registry (studio) program. Currently, Frey is represented by Greenhut Galleries of Portland, Maine and Shaw Jewelry of Northeast Harbor, Maine. Frey's work is in a number of private collections and he has completed many commissioned pieces, including two large scale murals in the downeast area.
Painting is an enjoyable process. My goal is to create spaciousness and appreciation for the artistic process for both myself and the viewer.
Carl Little (art critic for Art in America and author of several books): "[Mr. Frey's] approach recalls certain contemporary emulators of Marsden Hartley, including Philip Barter and David Bates. Where Hartley's famous crashing wave at Schoodic was monumental, Mr. Frey's appears to leap with joy into the air."
