de rerum natura 42, watercolor and wax, 7"x7", 2004, $750

MaJo Keleshian

De rerum natura is an ongoing series of paintings done in the studio that attempts to interpret various aspects of nature. The title comes from a poem by Lucretius and is translated as "on nature" or "on the nature of things." The materials used--the paper, the colors, various tools--are freely manipulated. As the surface is worked a recurring iconography of marks--circles, crossed lines, scratches, track-like shapes--appear and suggest directions and possibilities for the image. In the best moments, there is an interplay between the materials and impressions from my natural surroundings.
