Gary CooperIn considering a bronze relief, I begin by researching the subject matter to discover key elements and ideas that might deliver a strong visual allegory of contemporary meaning to the general public or intended audience. Research sources include collaboration with local historians, naturalists, and educators. Elements of the natural world have always been favored and key symbols in my bas-relief work. To sculpt I use a highly specialized form of CAD modeling software. The software's intuitive and natural sculpting tools I employed for my most recent commission, the Maine Women Veterans Memorial Bronze Plaque in the Maine State House Hall of Flags (dedicated February 18, 2011). The CAD software generates CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) data for machine carving the actual size plastic model for final retouching to be used in the lost wax bronze casting process.
